The Station Master`s Report

What a month ………..!

Where do you start? OK, for my part, the Elgin exhibition had to rank as the highlight of my month. The 'Wizard of Oz' himself (Gary) stuck to his guns and landed over here in the UK on the Thursday morning prior to the exhibition. Now, it wasn’t all smooth running ( thanks to Virgin Trains East Coast ) but a great time seem to be had anyway. I’ll not bang on here right now as I am sure there will be more of that later on in the news letter. (ahem …, we’ll forget about the curry bit Gary...!)

There has been some great posts flying in on a mixture of subjects. Pauls “ dark side “ continues to rope folks in with interest being shown in his latest tutorial for programming stepper motors, eg for turntable mechanisation.
Rob Pulham and Keith keep us up to speed in the various kit builds, that are the latest to adorn their work benches.
Gormo has kept the shed in business with home made scenic materials and an excellent insight into how to convert a crudely running passenger carriage ( a magazine freebie ) into credit worthy rolling stock. Well done Gormo !!!

On the subject of Gormo our “ 2016 keeper of the “ Golden Goat “ title, its time to hand the mantle over to our worthy 2017 recipient. The Golden Goat was set up as recognition of the member who in the current operating year has went well and truly beyond the call of duty in their participation within the forum. That could be through assisting with the smooth running of the forum, their contributions through their posting and general participation or maybe providing good all round help and friendliness to others on the forum.
This award which attracts no prize other than the title itself can be won by anyone regardless of if they are a member, moderator or whatever.
This year, the recipient was an easy choice as he has thrown himself whole heartedly into every corner of the forum. Welcoming guests, answering queries, posting up tutorials and ( giving it away now ) taking overall responsibility for the pulling together and distributing of the Footbridge as well as travelling half way around the world …, to operate a layout. All this before he even starts to dedicate time to his own projects …, and he does that as well. Is it really necessary to name him ?? Oh ….., ok then, Congratulations Gary on the award of this very prestigious annual commendation. We shall arrange the official handover of title and avatar from Gormo shortly.

Well, that brings me on to another award ……… The Christmas 2017 Competition Prize Award. The Competition was set in two categories. First category was the creation of a 'Period Christmas Diorama' ( Scale ) depicting a Christmas scene and the second category was the creation of a 'Fun Christmas Diorama' which did not have to be to any particular size or scale. Entrants ended up being a bit thin on the ground but the main entries that were submitted by Gormo, Ianvolvo and Jimmy Styles were all worthy entries. However, there was only to be one winner per category so …….. I can announce that the winner of the Scale Period Diorama is “Chapel Rise“ by Jimmy Styles, who walks off with the phenomenal print from the original painted work entitled “Should we really be here“, as very generously donated by Chrissie Pulham, the Artist herself. Congratulations Jimmy on a fantastic submission. Our (Non Scale) Fun Christmas Diorama was won by none other than Gormo for the depiction of a “ Christmas Village “ as served by the Polar Express. Gormo wins £150.00 of Townstreet products as provided by our Sponsor Townstreet. Congratulations also goes out to our very worthy third submission as provided by Ianvolvo46, another that was entered into the non scale category depicting another fun Christmas Diorama. Very valiant effort and thanks for submitting and participating.

Get the feeling that this edition of the Footbridge is a bit of a bumper edition …….. on we go ……

Another occasion that needs to be marked is the successful migration of Platform1 onto its new hosting server. This seemed to go without any serious hitches and we are now up and running in what hopefully will be our forever home, (fingers crossed).
There will be further announcements to be made as we are now well and truly progressing with our new look forum software. There is no firm date for the change over as yet but it is hoped that it will just be a matter of a few weeks from now. Keep your eye on the forum announcements, the footbridge, email system and of course, our Facebook pages for more up to date information on this.

As we go to pixels were are fast approaching our second birthday ( 5th December ). From the last edition of the Footbridge we counted 415 members which has now reached 438. Our growth has surpassed my expectations of where I thought we would be at this stage and can only be testimony to the effort and content that has been provided by YOU , our members. I can’t thanks you enough for all your contributions and commitment that you have all shown in making this forum such an attractive place for people to visit.
I look forward to year three and beyond and hope you continue to enjoy the fantastic facility that you helped create. As usual all that is left for me to do is hand you over to our Footbridge Wizard, our Golden Goat for 2017, Gary.

Cheers for now,

Toto

Poetic license is all you need to build a layout and Davoetype's 'Dargan' is a prime example of a 'railway town' that doesn't exist , and now it's growing...
